35-year-old Ben Stokes said there is no chance of an Ashes comeback, telling BBC Test Match Special he is "done" and "very happy" with his retirement decision.
England's 160-run loss to New Zealand in the third Test sealed a 2-1 home series defeat and brought Stokes' international career to a close after 122 Tests, 114 ODIs and 43 T20s.
Stokes said the toll of the past six to 12 months drove the decision, adding that recent "unfortunate events" — including his curfew breach before the second Test — may also have contributed.
Brendon McCullum said he tried to persuade Stokes to stay but accepted he had made up his mind, while the coach's own position now faces scrutiny after England's first home series defeat of three Tests or more since 2012.
