For a 24-year-old big coming off a career-best season, that is defensible business. Sharpe also is more than a generic backup. He averaged 8.7 points, 6.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.1 steals in under 19 minutes a game while shooting 60.1%. Brooklyn’s own actions suggest it views him as part of the next phase of the roster: the Nets declined his old option specifically to re-sign him, and with Nic Claxton gone, Sharpe could see a larger role or even compete to start. The rebuilding context matters, but it cuts both ways. Paying premium money for a reserve on a 20-win team can look inefficient if that player has limited upside. But Brooklyn has cap space, needs competent young players, and is trying to build development continuity rather than simply strip the roster down. A short two-year term also limits risk and preserves flexibility. The only real case for “overpay” is role-based: if Sharpe remains strictly a backup center, $10 million a year is on the high side for that archetype. Still, given his age, production and the Nets’ financial position, this is closer to a fair-value bet than a mistake.
