Traditional 401(k) withdrawals are taxed as ordinary income, and once required minimum distributions begin, those forced withdrawals can push retirees into higher brackets, make up to 85% of Social Security taxable, and trigger Medicare IRMAA surcharges two years later. That is the “domino effect” Utah advisers Tyson and Ryan Thacker are warning about. Retirees often pull from whichever account is convenient—401(k), IRA, Roth, or taxable savings—without managing the tax impact across all income sources. Over 20 to 30 years, that can mean tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars in unnecessary taxes and higher Medicare premiums. A 401(k) is less of a “tax bomb” if it is part of a balanced plan across tax-deferred, taxable, and Roth accounts. Strategic Roth conversions in lower-income years, careful timing of Social Security, use of HSAs and qualified charitable distributions, and annual monitoring of IRMAA thresholds can reduce the damage. So the real risk is not the 2026 law itself. It is entering retirement with a large pre-tax 401(k) and no withdrawal strategy.

B.O.S.S. Retirement Solutions' Tyson and Ryan Thacker have released a free Utah guide warning retirees that poor withdrawal planning can cost them six figures in unnecessary taxes over retirement.
The guide argues the mistake is failing to coordinate withdrawals from IRAs, 401(k)s, Roth accounts and taxable savings, which can raise taxes on distributions, Social Security benefits and other income.
That chain reaction can also push retirees into higher Medicare premium brackets, with the Thackers saying two retirees starting with $1 million could see sharply different lifetime tax bills based solely on withdrawal strategy.
The offer is aimed at Utah residents, including people already retired, and pitches earlier planning as the best way to preserve more savings without relying on loopholes or higher-risk investing.
