John Fetterman said New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s pledge to ignore a Supreme Court ruling on migrant protections amounts to a constitutional crisis and faulted Democrats for not condemning it.
The warning followed two Supreme Court immigration wins for President Donald Trump last week, including a ruling that let his administration move ahead with ending Temporary Protected Status for Haitian and Syrian migrants during ongoing court challenges.
Mamdani said in a video statement that his administration would never accept that TPS ruling, prompting Fetterman to argue that refusing to honor Supreme Court decisions undermines democratic integrity.
Fetterman cast the episode as a double standard inside his party, noting Democrats had earlier warned Trump could trigger a constitutional crisis if his administration defied court orders.
The clash adds to broader Democratic tensions over the party’s leftward shift, with Fetterman repeatedly singling out progressive figures such as Mamdani.
