Ukraine Suspends 425th Assault Commander After 26 Noncombat Deaths Probe

Lieutenant Colonel Yurii Harkavyi was suspended from command of Ukraine’s 425th Separate Assault Regiment as investigators examine alleged soldiers’ rights abuses in the unit.
At least 26 noncombat deaths among recruits are part of the scrutiny, which intensified after Ukrainian outlet Babel published a June 23 investigation into abuse allegations inside the regiment, also known as Skelia.
The unit has reportedly suffered higher-than-average battlefield losses, adding pressure on Ukraine’s military leadership as questions grow over command practices and treatment of personnel.
The case lands as Kyiv faces broader manpower strains and a tougher mobilization drive, making discipline, recruitment and troop welfare increasingly sensitive issues.
