Summary
Germany and parts of France faced temperatures up to 42C on Saturday as Europe’s second heat wave in two months spread east across central and eastern regions.
The eastward-moving heat dome eased conditions in some western areas but raised the risk of severe thunderstorms, with forecasters warning of heavy downpours, strong gusts and hail.
Poland was under broad heat warnings with highs above 34C and up to 39C expected on Sunday and Monday, while Italy issued top-level alerts for more than a dozen regions.
Switzerland and parts of Austria, the Czech Republic, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Slovakia and Slovenia were also on high alert, extending disruption after the heat strained transport, factories and power systems.
June records were broken earlier in Britain, France and the Netherlands, and scientists said such extreme early-summer heat would have been virtually impossible before human-driven warming.
