Q: With the NHL's best prospect pipeline, what is the San Jose Sharks' biggest challenge ahead?

The San Jose Sharks’ biggest challenge now is turning the NHL’s deepest prospect pool into a winning NHL team. The draft reinforced how strong the pipeline is. San Jose added Ivar Stenberg, Keaton Verhoeff and Ryan Lin to a young core that already includes Macklin Celebrini, Michael Misa, Will Smith and Sam Dickinson. Corey Pronman’s assessment that the Sharks have the league’s best pipeline “by a massive margin” reflects how much high-end talent Mike Grier has accumulated. But stockpiling prospects is the easier phase of a rebuild. The harder part is development, timing and fit. Several of San Jose’s top players are still at different stages of their path to the NHL, and the organization must decide who is ready, who needs more time, and how to build a balanced roster around them without rushing anyone. That includes making difficult choices on which prospects become long-term pieces and which may need to be moved for established help. The Sharks also have to bridge the gap from promise to results. Even with elite young talent, they still need enough NHL-ready support—especially on defense and throughout the lineup—to become a playoff team. At the same time, cap management will grow more complicated as entry-level stars earn bonuses and eventually move to expensive second contracts. In short, San Jose’s challenge is no longer finding talent. It is developing, integrating and managing that talent well enough to turn a great pipeline into sustained contention.

San Jose emerged as the analyst’s biggest first-round winner after taking Ivar Stenberg at No. 2, Keaton Verhoeff at No. 9 and Ryan Lin at No. 21.
Those picks were praised for balancing best-player value with organizational need, adding a top Swedish forward in Stenberg and two highly regarded defense prospects in Verhoeff and Lin.
Toronto also landed in the winners tier by selecting Gavin McKenna at No. 1, with the analyst calling him the class’s most talented player and an immediate top-six, top-power-play fit.
Seattle, Winnipeg, Nashville and Utah rounded out the winners group, highlighted by Seattle taking defenseman Chase Reid at No. 7 and Nashville adding Wyatt Cullen at No. 10 and Tommy Bleyl at No. 31.
At the other end of the ranking, Philadelphia’s No. 27 pick Maksim Sokolovskii, Ottawa’s Nos. 25 and 32 swings, and Vegas’ No. 29 selection Juho Piiparinen were labeled the first round’s biggest losers.
