Summary
More than 660 flights at Heathrow and Gatwick were delayed on Saturday, with some pushed back up to six hours and dozens cancelled as thunderstorms hit southeast England.
Temporary air traffic control restrictions cut arrivals and departures, and NATS said weather disruption was likely to continue through the rest of the day.
FlightAware counted 340 delayed flights at Heathrow and 320 at Gatwick, while Eurocontrol said the two airports were the only UK hubs facing “heavy” thunderstorm-related delays.
EasyJet said it had pre-emptively cancelled some Gatwick flights and was offering rebooking, refunds, hotels and meals; passengers reported being stuck on planes for four hours or more.
Storm clouds between southeast England and northwestern Europe are causing the worst airspace delays, even as an amber heat warning remains in force until Sunday morning.
