Summary
Valve said its current SteamOS stack now enables HDMI 2.1 VRR on Steam Machine, including both FreeSync and HDMI Forum VRR displays.
The fix follows joint work with AMD to resolve Linux support issues that had left the hardware labeled HDMI 2.0 despite supporting several HDMI 2.1 features.
4K 120Hz over HDMI is available now using compression, while a forthcoming FRL update is expected to add 4K 144Hz uncompressed and 4K 240Hz with Display Stream Compression.
Steam Machine already offers DisplayPort 1.4 output for 4K 144Hz or 4K 240Hz with DSC, but the HDMI update broadens high-refresh support through SteamOS.
