Best Buy Cuts Refurbished MacBook Air to $299.99, Undercutting Rivals by 50%

Q: Is a $300 refurbished Intel MacBook in 2026 a savvy bargain or just a trap of obsolete tech?

For most buyers in 2026, a $300 refurbished Intel MacBook is closer to obsolete tech than a smart buy. The Best Buy offer on the 2019 MacBook Air is cheap, and “Geek Squad Certified Refurbished” does add value because it suggests the machine has been checked and may come with some warranty protection. At $299.99, it also sits within the low end of the used Intel Mac market, so the sticker price is not outrageous. But the bigger issue is usefulness going forward. A 2019 Intel MacBook Air has an aging Intel Core i5, just 8GB of RAM, and only 128GB of storage. In 2026, that is a thin setup for modern multitasking, schoolwork with many browser tabs, video calls, and newer apps. Battery wear is another likely problem on a seven-year-old laptop, even refurbished. The software outlook is worse. Apple has moved fully to Apple Silicon, and Intel Macs are near the end of their mainstream macOS life. That means fewer years of updates, weaker long-term security support, and growing compatibility gaps as more apps are optimized for M-series Macs. Repairability and parts availability also become harder as these machines age into Apple’s vintage category. It can still make sense for a narrow buyer: someone who needs a very cheap Mac for basic browsing, writing, streaming, or legacy x86 software. For anyone wanting a dependable daily laptop with a few years of life left, it is a false economy. Spending more on an M1 or newer Mac is the safer bargain.
