The key new rule is that most of T-Mobile’s free lines are no longer eligible for device promotions, shutting out many long-time customers who built up “Line On Us” perks over the years. If you cancel service, switch off the qualifying plan, or in many cases pay off the phone early, the remaining credits stop and you can be billed for the unpaid balance. The fine print also matters because the deal usually requires a qualifying premium plan, such as Experience Beyond at about $100 a month with AutoPay, though some lower-priced qualifying plans may exist. So while the phone itself can net out to $0 over time, you are still committing to a relatively expensive wireless plan for 24 months. Taxes on the phone’s full pre-credit price are typically due upfront, and activation or connection fees may apply. Eligibility can be narrower than the headline suggests. Some offers require a new line and often a port-in from another carrier, while existing customers must be on an eligible plan. T-Mobile has also limited many high-value promotions per account, and some free lines may not qualify. So the deal is best understood as a two-year service-and-financing commitment with credits, not a no-strings-attached free phone.
