The Steam Machine starts at $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB, and Valve’s own engineers say the main problem is memory: DDR5 RAM and NVMe SSDs have become unusually expensive. Pierre-Loup Griffais says Valve wants the hardware cheaper and would cut prices if parts fall, but Yazan Aldehayyat says that is unlikely soon. The wider market supports that warning. AI servers and data centers are absorbing huge volumes of DRAM and NAND, while Samsung, SK Hynix and Micron are prioritizing higher-margin enterprise and AI products. Reports of Micron locking in elevated prices for years, plus forecasts from IDC and Gartner that shortages could last through 2027 or beyond, suggest this is not a short-term spike. Consumer SSD and DRAM prices have already surged sharply, and Valve has already raised Steam Deck prices for the same reason. That does not mean the idea is dead. Valve still points to roughly $700 as a plausible target if component markets normalize, and SteamOS plus Proton make the platform more viable than the failed 2015 effort. But in the current environment, the Steam Machine looks like an enthusiast device, not a mass-market console alternative. So the dream is not over in principle. In practice, AI-driven memory economics have pushed affordable living-room PC gaming out of reach for the near term.
