Probably not in a practical sense, though it may feel dated. The strongest case for these GE Cync bulbs is that their control method is deliberately simple: no Wi‑Fi, no app, no account, no hub, and no dependence on changing smart-home standards. That matters because the broader market is moving toward Matter, Thread, app control, and voice assistants, but those systems still often suffer from compatibility glitches, version mismatches, and fragmented networks. A basic remote avoids most of that. What is more likely to age is not the bulbs’ usability, but their feature set. Over a 10- to 13-year lifespan, consumers may increasingly expect scheduling, voice control, automation, and integration with platforms like Alexa, Google Home, or Apple Home. These bulbs will not grow into those capabilities if they are truly remote-only. In that sense, they could become technologically old-fashioned even while continuing to work well. The bigger long-term risk is the accessory, not the lighting method itself. If the included remote is lost, damaged, or no longer sold, replacement could be harder to find years from now. But as long as the remote remains functional, the bulbs should still do what they were designed to do: change color and brightness reliably. So for buyers who want a low-friction lighting upgrade rather than a fully connected smart-home device, remote-only control is less likely to become obsolete than to become merely less fashionable.
