David Autor to Lead MIT Economics Department From July 1

MIT named labor economist David Autor head of its Department of Economics, with the appointment taking effect July 1.
Autor succeeds Jon Gruber, who has led the department since July 2023, and said he plans to steer the department through budget tightening and a shifting political landscape.
AI is also central to his agenda: Autor said advancing AI is creating new opportunities for both teaching and research.
Autor, an MIT professor since 1999, is known for work on how technology and globalization reshape jobs, wages, inequality and politics, and he also co-directs NBER's Labor Studies Program.
