Summary
Indeed data showed software development postings in India dropped 12.3% over the past three months, the steepest decline among major tech roles as employers reassess staffing.
Technology hiring weakened far more than the broader market: overall postings on Indeed slipped 0.7% in May 2026, while IT infrastructure fell 10.2%, IT systems 9.3% and data and analytics 6.7%.
AI adoption, automation and team restructuring are driving companies to hire more selectively, even as demand persists for digital transformation and newer AI- and automation-linked roles.
Remote opportunities also narrowed, with remote job share in software development, IT infrastructure and support down 4.4%, pointing to a stronger employer push toward office-based collaboration.
Outside tech, hiring stayed strong in sports, up 41%, beauty and wellness, up 36%, and personal care and home health, up 34%, underscoring an increasingly uneven Indian job market.
India's technology job market is undergoing a major adjustment, moving away from the rapid growth seen after the pandemic. The sector is highly sensitive to global economic changes, leading to a cautious hiring environment and a sharp drop in recruitment activity. Entry-level opportunities have become scarce, making competition for tech jobs much tougher. This challenge is intensified by the potential return of H-1B visa holders from the US, who may be forced to come back due to recent policy changes. As a result, both fresh graduates and experienced professionals face a more competitive and uncertain job landscape.
