Kevin McCarthy said Trump should use “every available tool” to force Senate action on the SAVE America Act, giving the president a high-profile ally as the election bill stalls.
The push comes after Trump scrapped a housing-bill signing ceremony Wednesday to pressure Republicans on the measure, which would require proof of citizenship and voter ID in federal elections.
60 votes are needed in the Senate, but GOP leaders say they do not have the numbers and Republicans have resisted ending the filibuster amid unified Democratic opposition.
A two-week Senate recess over the July 4 holiday leaves the bill in limbo, while a conservative blockade on the House floor has deepened Republican infighting and threatened other legislative priorities.
Trump also has 10 days to sign or veto the bipartisan housing package he delayed, and it becomes law automatically if he takes no action.
