Twenty-six Franciscan University faculty and staff urged the Society of Saint Pius X not to proceed with its planned July 1 consecration of four bishops in Écône, Switzerland.
Their open letter says ordaining bishops without a papal mandate would deepen the SSPX's separation from Rome, create a schism and place the society's gifts outside full communion with the Church.
Pope Leo XIV and the Vatican have already warned that the consecrations would constitute a schismatic act and trigger excommunication, with Leo saying he may make another appeal.
The intervention adds pressure ahead of the July 1 ceremony, which the professors framed as a decisive test of whether SSPX returns to dialogue with the Holy See.
