CHC members are weighing whether to admit incoming Rep. Darializa Avila Chevalier, with several saying acceptance will depend on whether she aligns with the caucus’s priorities and legislative agenda.
Avila Chevalier arrives after unseating a beloved incumbent and carrying positions that unsettle colleagues, including calls to abolish Israel, policing, borders and private property.
Rep. Adriano Espaillat, whose departure is seen as a real loss inside the caucus, declined to say whether she should join, though members say loyalty to the veteran lawmaker could shape her reception.
Other Democrats are urging inclusion: Linda Sanchez said the party must move forward together, Delia Ramirez pledged to help prepare Avila Chevalier, and former chair Chuy Garcia said all incoming members should be welcomed.
The membership debate lands as the caucus prepares to choose a chair for the next Congress, with Vice Chair Darren Soto viewed as the likely successor despite a difficult reelection race in his redrawn district.
