It likely helped Minnesota farmers mainly by pushing up demand and prices for crops tied to biofuels, especially corn and soybeans. The Middle East conflict disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and liquefied natural gas. That drove energy prices higher and rattled fertilizer and commodity markets. When petroleum becomes more expensive, ethanol and biodiesel become more competitive, which tends to raise demand for corn and soybean-related products produced in states like Minnesota. That fits the trade data. Even as Minnesota’s total exports fell in the first quarter, exports in the “oil seeds, grain, and fertilizers” category jumped 45 percent. The broader decline was driven mostly by a collapse in mineral fuel and oil exports to Canada, while non-fuel exports were up overall. In other words, agriculture was one of the bright spots. There is an important caveat: the same conflict also raised fertilizer costs, which squeezed margins for many growers. So the effect was not a universal windfall. Farmers best positioned to benefit were those selling corn, soybeans, or other products linked to stronger biofuel demand and higher global crop prices. So the “boom” came less from the conflict directly than from its market effects: higher oil prices, disrupted global supply chains, stronger biofuel economics, and a resulting lift in demand for Minnesota farm exports.

$5.8 billion in first-quarter exports left Minnesota down 8% from a year earlier, a $504 million decline, according to the state Department of Employment and Economic Development.
A $628 million drop in mineral fuel and oil exports to Canada drove the slide, with DEED tying the weakness in part to uncertainty around federal actions; that downturn has persisted since Q2 2025.
Canada-bound exports fell 41%, while gains to Mexico of 18% only partly offset the hit; Asian markets slipped 3%, including a 23% drop to China, and Europe rose 11%.
Outside the Canada fuel category, Minnesota's other exports grew 2% in the quarter, led by a 26% rise in electrical equipment and a 45% increase in oil seeds, grain and fertilizers.
