It is poor network hygiene: weak passwords, outdated router firmware, default admin credentials, old encryption, or putting laptops, phones, cameras, locks, and other smart-home devices on the same unrestricted network. Yard coverage means your signal may be reachable farther outside your walls, so any existing weakness becomes easier to probe. Smart-home devices are often the softest target because many receive infrequent updates and have limited built-in security.
