Barack Obama said on the "All the Smoke" podcast that Trump seems preoccupied with him, joking he has "a suite" in the president's head.
Obama tied that jab to governing, saying a president should be handling "five to 10" hard problems instead of fixating on a predecessor, which he said shows Trump is not focused on Americans.
He also said Trump acts differently in private, claiming that in a couple of face-to-face encounters he "don't talk like that because he knows better."
The White House hit back through spokesperson Davis Ingle, who called Obama "one of the most dishonest, divisive, and destructive Presidents in history."
The exchange extends Obama's recent calibrated criticism of Trump: he told the New Yorker last month he thinks about pushing back "every day" but avoids becoming a full-time commentator.
