Summary
At least 222 trainees at Lackland Air Force Base had contracted the flu by Thursday after a three-week outbreak in Basic Military Training, according to Rep. Joaquin Castro.
The outbreak followed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth’s decision two months ago to end the military’s annual flu-shot requirement, though the Air Force later received an exemption to vaccinate all trainees.
Air Force officials said symptomatic trainees are being isolated and treated with antivirals such as Tamiflu, while close contacts are being monitored before returning to training.
An October 2025 military health report said recruit stations face the highest flu infection rates each year and that younger service members have the highest hospitalization rates.
The outbreak has intensified criticism that the policy shift could hurt readiness at Lackland’s 37th Training Wing, which trains more than 36,000 troops annually.
