Samsung’s discount looks less like a sign the SSD shortage is easing and more like a tactical Prime Day promotion on a consumer drive in a market being distorted by AI. The shortage is real, but it is concentrated in enterprise storage and NAND supply tied to AI servers and hyperscale data centers. Manufacturers, including Samsung, have been prioritizing higher-margin enterprise SSDs and AI-related memory, while consumer SSD prices have generally risen sharply. That is why ZDNET called the 990 Pro deal unusually timely rather than normal market pricing. Samsung can still cut the retail price of the 990 Pro because it is vertically integrated, making its own NAND, controller and DRAM. That gives it more flexibility than rivals to run a short-term promotion without signaling a broader collapse in prices. In practice, this looks like a retailer-and-manufacturer push to drive volume during Amazon’s Prime Day window, not a reversal of the AI-driven supply crunch. There is also a product-cycle reason. The 990 Pro remains one of the best PCIe 4.0 SSDs, but PCIe 5.0 models are now the headline products. For most buyers, Gen4 still offers nearly the same real-world experience at lower heat and cost, so discounting the 990 Pro helps Samsung defend market share and clear premium Gen4 inventory while newer Gen5 drives take the spotlight. So the big markdown is best understood as a limited consumer promotion on an older flagship, not evidence that AI is no longer squeezing the SSD market.
