China Affirms Legal Protection for Standard Chinese and 7 Minority Language Versions

Seven ethnic-minority language versions of China’s draft ethnic solidarity law were displayed at a Wednesday briefing, underscoring official backing for multilingual access.
A top legislature official said both promotion of standard Chinese and protection of ethnic minorities’ rights to use their own languages are guaranteed by the Constitution and other laws.
The language assurance comes as China prepares to implement the Ethnic Unity and Progress Promotion Law on July 1, a measure adopted in March to strengthen cohesion among 56 ethnic groups.
