Summary
Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored early in the second half to lift Switzerland past Canada 2-1 in Vancouver, overturning the group standings and sending the Swiss into first place.
Vargas struck 39 seconds after the restart and Manzambi soon added another before Promise David scored on his first touch for Canada, but the co-hosts could not find an equalizer.
Top spot keeps Switzerland in Vancouver for a July 2 Round of 32 match against a third-place qualifier, while Canada must travel to Los Angeles to face the Group A runner-up, currently projected as South Korea.
For Canada, the defeat was still historic: four points were enough for the country's first World Cup knockout berth, though coach Jesse Marsch said he regretted not switching to a back five at halftime.
Switzerland's win made them group winners for only the second time, after 2006, and extended their run of reaching the knockout stage to four straight World Cups.
