Summary
Rep. Rashida Tlaib called the combined 450-year prison terms for eight convicted antifa members a "travesty" and "totally unjustified," arguing the case reflects abuse of Trump-era terrorism powers.
The sentences followed the first successful federal terrorism prosecution of alleged antifa members after Trump’s 2025 NSPM-7 labeled antifa a domestic terrorist organization.
Benjamin Song, a former Marine reservist, received 100 years after prosecutors said he shot Alvarado Police Lt. Thomas Gross in the neck during the July 2025 attack on the Prairieland detention center.
Federal prosecutors said the group arrived armed, in dark clothing and face coverings, vandalized the site, launched fireworks and explosives, and prepared rifles before opening fire on responding officers.
Tlaib’s remarks drew immediate condemnation from conservatives and White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, while the Justice Department separately announced charges against 15 anti-ICE activists in Minnesota over alleged antifa-linked violent organizing.
