The evidence cuts both ways, but the stronger read is that playing next to Darius Acuff Jr. exposed the role Thomas is most likely to fill as a pro: a complementary guard who can shoot, attack secondary gaps and defend multiple backcourt spots. Arkansas did not give him many chances to run the offense full-time because Acuff, the No. 7 pick, dominated those reps. That likely suppressed some of Thomas’s on-ball creation value in scouts’ eyes. At the same time, the split stats show why evaluators still wonder what was left unseen. In 210 minutes without Acuff, Thomas reportedly jumped to 26.5 points per 40 minutes on 62% true shooting, compared with 19.2 points per 40 on 55% true shooting alongside him. His biggest games, including a 30-point overtime win and a 29-point performance in the SEC title run, suggested more self-creation upside than his season-long role allowed. But Thomas did not fall because teams stopped believing in him. He remains near the top of the second-round board because scouts still value his deep shooting, off-ball versatility and defensive tools. Those are exactly the traits that translate for guards who are not primary initiators in the NBA. So Acuff’s presence probably cost Thomas some showcase opportunities, but it also gave teams a realistic look at how he may actually survive and add value in the league.
