Nancy Lacore and Jenny Costa Honeycutt won South Carolina’s 1st Congressional District primary runoffs Tuesday, securing the Democratic and Republican nominations for a November showdown.
The runoffs were required after neither party produced a candidate with enough support in the June primary to avoid a second round.
Lacore, a retired three-star Navy rear admiral, entered the day with momentum after finishing 7.6 percentage points ahead of Mac Deford in the Democratic primary.
Honeycutt, a Charleston County councilwoman, defeated Mark Smith in the GOP runoff and has framed her campaign around steady leadership for Lowcountry residents.
The general election will decide who represents South Carolina’s coastal 1st District, the seat being vacated by Nancy Mace after her unsuccessful gubernatorial bid.
