Karmelo Anthony Adds 6 Lawyers to Appeal 35-Year Murder Sentence

A six-lawyer team has joined Karmelo Anthony’s bid to overturn his murder conviction and 35-year sentence for the 2025 stabbing death of 17-year-old Austin Metcalf at a Frisco, Texas, track meet.
A motion to substitute counsel was filed Monday, replacing Anthony’s court-appointed appellate lawyer with a broader defense group that includes Russell Wilson II, Texas NAACP president Gary Bledsoe and a Ben Crump Law attorney.
Anthony’s trial defense argued self-defense, but Jeff Metcalf said newly public court evidence shows there was no fight, no punches and no group attack before his son was stabbed.
Court records describe a two-inch fatal chest wound, while the Metcalf family says the release of graphic audio, video and photos has deepened the strain as they continue to heal.
