MSI’s $1,800 Claw 8 EX AI+ looks more like a glimpse of the future for handheld PC hardware than a sensible buy for most people today. On the merits, the device appears to set a new performance bar. Reports around Intel’s custom Arc G3 Extreme chip point to gains of roughly 50 to 75 percent over rivals such as the Asus ROG Ally X and Lenovo Legion Go 2, with examples like Cyberpunk 2077 reaching about 95 fps at 1080p medium. It also stands out on efficiency: playable performance at lower power levels, an 80Wh battery, and more than three hours in demanding games are meaningful advances for a Windows handheld. Features such as a 120Hz VRR 8-inch display, Hall Effect controls, Wi‑Fi 7, Thunderbolt 4, and 32GB of LPDDR5x reinforce that this is a premium, forward-looking machine. But the price is the problem. At $1,800, it sits far above the mainstream handheld market, where premium Windows devices usually land closer to $800 to $1,300. Even allowing for the AI-driven memory shortage that MSI cites, this is laptop money. For most buyers, the value equation is weak, especially when cheaper alternatives already deliver strong portable gaming. So the Claw 8 EX AI+ is best understood as a technology showcase with real significance. It signals where handheld PCs are heading on performance and efficiency, but at this price it is closer to an enthusiast luxury product than the future most consumers will actually buy.
