Apple Adds iOS 27 CarPlay Video for Parked Cars, Opening AirPlay Streaming on Vehicle Screens

Q: Is in-car video just entertainment, or is it Apple's first step to completely taking over your car's dashboard?

It is both, but more importantly it is a strategic expansion of Apple’s role in the car. On its face, the new CarPlay video feature is an entertainment tool. Apple says it is for parked moments such as waiting at an airport or charging an EV, and playback is locked out while driving. That safety limit matters: this is not Apple turning the dashboard into a rolling TV, but adding a controlled use case for downtime in the car. The bigger story is what the feature signals. Apple is no longer treating CarPlay as simple phone mirroring. With iOS 27, developers can build dedicated CarPlay video apps, meaning Apple is expanding the in-car app ecosystem directly on the dashboard. That gives Apple more control over what users do in the vehicle interface, not just what they project from an iPhone. This fits a broader push led by CarPlay Ultra, which already goes far beyond entertainment. In supported vehicles, it can span multiple screens, including the instrument cluster, and integrate vehicle functions such as climate, radio and driving information. Aston Martin has launched it, and more brands are expected, though some automakers remain resistant because they want to keep control of customer data, branding and software revenue. So the video feature is not a dashboard takeover by itself. But it is a clear step in Apple’s larger effort to make CarPlay the default software layer for the car’s digital experience. The real test will be whether more automakers accept that trade-off.

WWDC 2026 brought Apple’s first detailed rollout plan for CarPlay video: compatible new vehicles will let users stream iPhone video to the dashboard display through AirPlay, but only when the car is parked.
iOS 27 also lets developers build CarPlay apps with video-browsing features, so users can find content directly in CarPlay before playback starts on a supported screen.
Safety rules keep playback disabled while driving, with Apple pitching the feature for idle moments such as airport waits or EV charging stops.
iOS 27 is already in developer beta, a public beta is due in July, and the update is slated for September on iPhone 11 and newer.
Apple has not named any vehicle models yet, leaving automaker support as the key factor in how quickly the feature reaches drivers.
