In George R.R. Martin’s *Fire and Blood*, the incident does not occur. But that book is written as a historical chronicle, not an intimate scene-by-scene drama, giving the series room to invent private moments that underline character motives. The show had already hinted at Aemond’s Oedipal fixation, and the Season 3 premiere makes it explicit. Ewan Mitchell said Aemond’s act is meant as a warped attempt at affection from someone who grew up feeling unloved and developed a “skewed sense” of intimacy. He also framed it as part of Aemond’s power grab: after effectively taking charge, he sees himself as the family’s dominant figure and acts with reckless entitlement. The scene therefore signals both emotional damage and political hubris. For Alicent, Olivia Cooke said the moment is one of “shock and horror” and reinforces a pattern in which men around her reduce her to physical value, from her marriage to Viserys to Larys Strong’s fetishization. The kiss deepens her sense that even her own son is now unsafe and uncontrollable, pushing her further toward wanting escape from the Red Keep. So the scene was introduced less to mirror the book than to intensify the show’s themes of power, trauma, sexual coercion and family corruption, while making Aemond more dangerous and Alicent more trapped.
