Joby, Archer and Vertical Aerospace are now locked in overlapping trade-secret, patent and tariff fights, turning a multibillion-dollar air-taxi race into a legal battle.
November 2025 brought Joby’s corporate-espionage suit against Archer; Archer then sued Vertical in February and in March accused Joby of hiding China-linked imports as items like “hair clips” and “socks.”
An ITC investigation opened in April into Joby’s China ties, creating a potential new obstacle for its target of launching service by 2028.
Certification remains unfinished across the sector: Joby has reached all 4 FAA type-certification stages and plans a Dubai launch later this year, while Archer has completed 3 of 4 and targets the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
Investor confidence has weakened as delays and legal costs mount, with Joby shares down almost 35% this year and Archer down nearly 33%.
