Android 17 lets Pixel users open up to five apps as bubbles—floating windows that sit over other apps—giving Google’s phones a built-in multitasking option beyond two-app split screen.
The feature targets a gap in Android 16, which could stretch split screen to a 90:10 layout but still could not handle more than two apps at once.
Pixel users create bubbles by long-pressing an app on the home screen or app drawer and tapping the Bubble icon; groups can hold five apps and collapse into a movable on-screen shortcut.
Pixel Fold, Pixel 9 Pro Fold and Pixel 10 Pro Fold show bubble groups in the taskbar on the inner display, keeping them hidden until users swipe up from the bottom.
Google’s implementation still trails Samsung’s One UI 8.5, which offers easier app-switcher access plus freer window moving, resizing and separation.
