11,800 private-sector jobs were added in New York in May, lifting the statewide total to 8,470,900 on a seasonally adjusted basis.
The unemployment rate held at 4.6% even as the labor force shrank by 11,400 people; the participation rate was unchanged at 61.7%.
April's picture was revised higher: total nonfarm payrolls were changed to a 1,300-job loss from a previously reported 10,600 decline, and private-sector losses were revised to 2,300 from 10,200.
Year over year, New York's private sector grew by 31,400 jobs, or 0.4%, trailing the national 0.5% gain, while May's monthly growth matched the U.S. pace at 0.1%.
