The former cabinet secretary linked that market reaction to Andy Burnham’s Makerfield by-election win, which has intensified pressure on Starmer to set out a departure timetable and avoid a full leadership contest.
Starmer has refused to quit, telling allies he will fight any challenge, while Downing Street said he remains focused on governing after he spent Friday calling cabinet ministers to test support.
Case, who served four prime ministers from 2020 to 2024, said leadership upheaval also stalls urgent decisions on health, education and defence, citing delayed choices after Defence Secretary John Healey’s resignation.
