Southern Europe Captures 11.71% of Summer Travel Intent as Geopolitical Disruption Redirects Demand

Southern Europe is set to take 11.71% of global international travel intent for June-August 2026, up 2.47 percentage points from a year earlier and making it the fastest-growing summer tourism region.
Flight rerouting, Middle East tensions and higher airline operating costs are pushing travelers toward nearer, more familiar destinations, according to Data Appeal’s flight-search-based Share of Searches Index.
Athens posted the region’s biggest gain, rising 0.23 points to 0.77% of global demand, while Barcelona led Southern Europe at 1.01%; Madrid, Rome and Milan also advanced on strong connectivity and beach-holiday appeal.
North America also strengthened to 8.36% of global travel intent, up 1.01 points, with New York, Los Angeles, Miami and Orlando helped by FIFA World Cup demand.
Asia still dominates overall—Eastern Asia at 14.41% and South-Eastern Asia at 13.58%—but Eastern Asia lost ground year on year and Western Asia saw the steepest regional drop, down 2.69 points.
