Multiple people were arrested over alleged vandalism at the Reflecting Pool, President Trump said Saturday, adding that repairs would begin immediately and calling the damage a serious crime against a national monument.
One detainee, 67-year-old Bethesda resident David Hearn, said Park Police and National Guard troops held him for five hours Friday after he touched a peeling section of the pool’s new blue coating out of what he called scientific curiosity.
Trump had alleged Friday that vandals damaged grass outside the pool and harmed the newly installed interior surface, though he provided no evidence; Hearn said he has a court date next month and is seeking legal help.
The arrests come days after the resurfaced pool turned fluorescent green and showed loose blue paint, problems that followed an April overhaul meant to fix years of leaks, algae and plumbing failures ahead of the nation’s 250th birthday.
