For most people who only need Word, Excel and PowerPoint on one main computer, a lifetime license is the cheaper choice. For people who use multiple devices, need cloud storage, or want the newest features, Microsoft 365 is usually the better value. The key math is simple. A perpetual copy such as Office 2024 is a one-time purchase, often around the price of one year of Microsoft 365 Personal. If you keep it for several years, it usually costs less overall than paying an annual subscription. That makes it the smarter financial option for light or steady users who do not need frequent upgrades. Microsoft 365 becomes easier to justify if you actually use what is included. The subscription adds ongoing feature updates, security support, OneDrive storage, multi-device access, and stronger collaboration tools. If you would otherwise pay separately for cloud storage, or if you work across a laptop, desktop and phone, the subscription can make more financial sense despite the higher long-term cost. There is also a timing issue. Office 2021 support ends on October 13, 2026, so buying or keeping that version now is hard to defend financially because it is near end of life. If you want a buy-once option, the relevant comparison is really Office 2024 versus Microsoft 365. In short, buy Office 2024 if your needs are basic and you want the lowest long-run cost.
