Bill Maher used his HBO show Friday to call Democrats’ refusal to embrace America 250 “vaguely embarrassing” and urged them not to boycott July 4 celebrations over opposition to President Donald Trump.
Maher argued Trump will try to blur himself with the country, but said Democrats should not help by treating patriotism as suspect, calling Trump only a “temporary caretaker” and “America’s employee.”
A Reuters/Ipsos poll from June 12-15 of 1,537 U.S. adults underscored the divide: 64% of Republicans said they would display a U.S. flag or bunting this July 4, versus 27% of Democrats.
The remarks come as Trump plans an outsized celebration for the nation’s 250th anniversary, turning the holiday into another test of how partisan identity shapes public displays of patriotism.
