Most major U.S. sports leagues and teams posted Juneteenth tributes Friday, but the NHL and the Detroit Lions stood out as notable holdouts.
The NFL itself acknowledged the federal holiday, and 31 of its 32 franchises did the same, leaving the Lions as the lone team in the league without a Juneteenth message.
That response contrasted with Pride Month, when the NFL’s main social accounts — with more than 36 million X followers and 32 million Instagram followers — did not mark June 1 at all.
The NHL’s silence also cut the other way: it had publicly supported Pride Month, while the NBA and MLB joined the NFL in recognizing Juneteenth.
The split underscores how leagues that now routinely weigh in on social causes are increasingly judged by fans not only for what they endorse, but also for what they ignore.
