Lagos’s electric ferries have already begun limited pilot activity, but the €410 million Omi Eko project is not expected to make a citywide dent in traffic until the late 2020s, with its biggest impact likely around 2030 to 2032. The project was launched in October 2025, and sea trials of the OMI-BUS electric ferry were carried out later that month. That means the technology is no longer theoretical: early deployment has started. But the broader programme is much larger, involving 15 structured ferry routes, 25 upgraded terminals and about 75 electric ferries, so the traffic benefits will depend on phased construction and rollout. Current reporting indicates the main implementation timeline runs through 2030. In practical terms, that suggests Lagos residents may begin to feel some relief as more ferries and terminals come into service over the next few years, but not all at once. The strongest effect is tied to the project’s long-term target of raising water transport’s share from under 1 percent today to 8 percent by 2032. If that target is met, the system could carry up to 25 million passengers a year, which is when it is expected to materially ease pressure on Lagos roads. So the short answer is: pilots are underway now, gradual benefits should emerge before 2030, but the full traffic-relief effect is expected closer to 2032.

Applications opened June 3 for the 2026 AI for Climate Action Award, a UNFCCC-KOICA competition for open-source AI solutions tackling climate adaptation and mitigation in LDCs and SIDS.
The program targets projects in areas including agriculture, energy, water, waste, transport, health and early warning systems, aiming to give promising climate tools wider visibility and support.
Eligible applicants must be at least 18 and show how their AI solution delivers proven or expected climate impact in vulnerable countries.
The overall winner will receive funded travel and accommodation to present at COP31 in Antalya, Türkiye, while finalists and semifinalists get forum travel, pitch coaching, media exposure and technical support.
July 3 is the application deadline, with semifinalists due July 27, finalists announced September 3 and the winner set to be named in October 2026.
