Summary
June Bootids are expected to peak between June 20 and June 27, with astronomers warning the shower can swing from a few meteors an hour to sudden outbursts.
7P/Pons-Winnecke causes the display as Earth crosses debris from the comet, whose fragments burn up in the atmosphere as meteors.
1998 brought as many as 100 meteors per hour and 2004 delivered about 20-50, but a hoped-for 2010 outburst fizzled at fewer than 10 per hour.
Northern Hemisphere skywatchers have the best view from dark sites, with the radiant in Boötes high in the western and southwestern evening sky through late June.
