No candidate can fully replicate Nydia Velázquez’s role overnight. After more than 30 years in Congress, she leaves behind institutional knowledge, seniority, committee influence, and deep ties to Puerto Rican, Brooklyn, and Queens communities that a newcomer simply cannot inherit. What a successor can do is carry forward parts of her legacy in different ways. Antonio Reynoso has Velázquez’s endorsement and argues that his record in city government shows he can be effective quickly. Claire Valdez is offering a more labor-centered approach, rooted in union organizing and a strong economic agenda. Julie Won is presenting herself as a newer voice with a broad care-focused platform. All three have tried to show they understand the district’s changing demographics while still addressing Puerto Rico, a defining issue for Velázquez and many voters. The harder reality is that Congress today makes it difficult to build the kind of long-term clout Velázquez accumulated. Seniority still matters, and recent turnover in Congress has been high, with many members serving shorter careers. That means even a talented successor may struggle to match her immediate influence in Washington. So the real test is not whether someone can “fill her shoes” exactly, but whether they can earn trust, build coalitions, and adapt her model of advocacy to a new political era. Velázquez’s successor is more likely to extend her legacy than replace it.
