Summary
Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday warned students, recent graduates and other job seekers that online employment scams are rising, especially fake work-from-home offers promising high pay or easy income.
Those schemes often use bogus applications to steal personal or financial information, or recruit victims to receive and reship expensive goods bought with stolen credit cards.
Another version offers discounted luxury products for resale; after victims pay upfront, the package either never arrives or contains junk, and the supposed employer often disappears.
Sunday said legitimate employers never require payment during hiring and urged applicants to verify companies, scrutinize email domains, ignore fake-check requests and discuss suspicious offers with someone they trust.
Victims should quickly contact the payment company to try to reverse the transaction and file a complaint with the attorney general's Bureau of Consumer Protection at 1-800-441-2555.
