Ben Stiller Confirms Multi-Part Knicks Documentary After Team's 1st Title in 53 Years

Q: Can superfan Ben Stiller objectively portray the Knicks' decades of dysfunction that preceded their improbable 2026 championship win?

Probably not in a fully objective sense, though he could still make a compelling and credible film if he leans into his perspective rather than pretending neutrality. Stiller is not an outside observer. He is a lifelong Knicks superfan, publicly attached to the team’s identity, and has called the project a “dream project.” That matters because the series is being made with the NBA, HBO and A24, with promised “unprecedented NBA access” and cooperation from the league and Madison Square Garden. In modern sports documentaries, that level of access often comes with narrative tradeoffs: the result can be more definitive and intimate, but less independent. That does not mean the documentary must ignore the Knicks’ failures. If Stiller interviews figures from those eras and includes uncomfortable decisions and internal conflict, the series could still be honest. The more realistic expectation is not strict objectivity but a fan’s account with strong access and emotional authority. Stiller is well positioned to capture what the drought felt like in New York and why the 2026 title landed so powerfully. But viewers should expect a celebratory, redemption-driven narrative, not a detached audit of every institutional failure.

Ben Stiller said he is directing a multi-part documentary on the New York Knicks with A24, HBO and the NBA, centered on the franchise’s championship run last weekend.
53 years after the Knicks’ last NBA title, the series will cover the team’s history, culture and legacy, building to what A24 called an improbable, record-breaking return to a championship.
Stiller told Jalen Brunson and Josh Hart on their podcast that he has already filmed material, had extensive access to the team and expects to keep shooting next season while conducting player interviews.
A24 said the project will span the franchise from the 1990s through the current title run, using unprecedented NBA access and never-before-seen footage for what it billed as a definitive account.
