A June 18 DOJ letter sent Major League Baseball to the EEOC for investigation after MLB warned three San Francisco Giants players who wrote Bible verses on Pride Night caps.
The Civil Rights Division said the warning may have violated Title VII by failing to accommodate religious expression, arguing employers must modify uniform rules unless doing so creates a substantial burden.
MLB said the warning was not disciplinary and concerned unauthorized writing on game uniforms, not the religious content; no fines or suspensions have been announced.
Harmeet Dhillon's letter questioned that explanation by citing MLB's 2020 approval of Black Lives Matter patches, casting the cap dispute as a possible double standard rather than a routine uniform issue.
The case now moves beyond baseball policy into a federal religious-discrimination review centered on Pride Night messaging, league control of uniforms and players' workplace rights.
