Q: Can one handheld's performance justify a price that could buy three different major game consoles?

For most buyers, no. The MSI Claw 8 EX AI+ appears to be one of the fastest gaming handhelds yet, but at $1,799 it is competing less with other handhelds than with gaming laptops and entire console setups. The performance case is real. Hands-on testing showed 120 fps in demanding games, and MSI and Intel say the new Arc G3 Extreme chip can beat AMD’s Z2 Extreme by roughly 24% to 42% depending on power level and game. The Claw also brings 32GB of LPDDR5x RAM, a 1TB SSD, an 80Wh battery, a bright 8-inch 120Hz VRR display, quieter thermals, and improved ergonomics. For a niche buyer who wants top-tier PC gaming in a portable form, that combination has genuine value. But value is not the same as raw speed. At roughly the same price, a buyer could get an Xbox Series X, a PlayStation 5 Slim, and a Nintendo Switch 2, gaining three ecosystems, major exclusives, and multiple ways to play. Those consoles are also sold on subsidized economics, while MSI must pass through rising component costs, especially for RAM and storage affected by AI data-center demand. That makes the Claw’s price understandable, but not broadly persuasive. Its strongest argument is not that it beats three consoles on value, but that it offers something they do not: high-end Windows PC gaming in one portable device. For enthusiasts who specifically want that, the premium may be defensible. For mainstream gamers, it is a hard sell.
