Three Amazon employees who spoke at Seattle City Council hearings on AI data centers were later called into HR investigations that their lawyers say could lead to discipline, including possible termination for one worker.
The complaint, filed Friday with Seattle's Office for Civil Rights, says Amazon monitored the workers' political advocacy and may have violated a city ordinance barring discrimination based on political ideology.
Amazon said it respects employees' right to speak but is examining whether they presented themselves as Amazonians rather than private citizens, adding that no decision on discipline has been made and disputing any termination threat.
The dispute follows Seattle's unanimous June 9 vote to pause new large-scale data centers for a year while it drafts rules, after employees denounced an "all-costs-justified AI build out."
The clash revives tensions with Amazon Employees for Climate Justice, whose founders were fired in 2020 before a 2021 labor settlement, as Amazon plans up to $200 billion in capital spending this year, mostly on AI infrastructure.
