Summary
Dean Ball said he has joined OpenAI to lead a “small, high-agency” frontier AI policy team focused on catastrophic risk, recursive self-improvement, labor-market effects and ties between leading labs and governments.
OpenAI declined to comment, but Ball confirmed the appointment in a Substack post after publication, framing the role around shaping policy with particular attention to the U.S. federal government.
Since early March, Ball had emerged as a prominent critic of the Trump administration’s clash with Anthropic, including Pentagon treatment of the company as a supply-chain risk and last week’s export curbs on Anthropic’s Fable AI model.
Before the White House, Ball worked at George Mason University’s Mercatus Center and Stanford’s Hoover Institution, adding to prior roles at the Manhattan Institute and the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Foundation.
